Vermicompost, or worm compost, is collected in the top bin after the worm tea has drained into the bottom bin.
Worm composting is the method of utilising worms to recycle food scraps and other organic material into a marketable soil supplement, called vermicompost, also known as worm compost.
When worms eat food bits, the bits become compost as they pass through the worm's body. Vaskap Kariba Erdwurms uses the popular red Kariba earthworm to turn organic food particles into quality compost. In turn, one can use this compost to fertilise vegetable gardens, lawns or any other form of vegetation.
Our compost is 100% organic and natural, as we only use quality food that passes through the earthworms, turning the soil into microbe-rich fertiliser.
Using earthworm compost (vermicompost) offers several benefits:
- Improves the soil aeration;
- Enriches the soil with micro-organisms by adding enzymes, such as cellulase and phosphatase;
- Microbial activity in worm castings is up to 20 times higher than in the soil and organic matter that the worm ingests;
- Attracts deep-burrowing earthworms already present in the soil;
- Improves water retaining capacity;
- Improves overall plant and root growth;
- Enhances germination and crop yield;
- Elimination of biowastes from the waste stream lessens pollution of other recyclables collected in a single bin;
- Helps to close the "metabolic gap" through recycling waste on-site;
- Large systems often use temperature control and mechanised harvesting; however, other equipment is relatively simple and does not wear out quickly;
- Production reduces greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and nitric oxide.
